Interested in modeling for De*Nada's upcoming Look Book or Product Shoot? Now's your chance!

We are currently looking for male and female models, between the ages of 18 to 24. Males should be 5’9” or taller without shoes and weigh no more than 170 lbs. Females should be 5’8” or taller without shoes and weigh no more than 125 lbs. Any race, eye or hair color is acceptable.

Both photo shoots will take place in D.C. and both are paid gigs. Product shoot is scheduled for the first weekend of February. Look Book shoot is scheduled for March. Times/Details TBD.

Tips on How to Travel with an Infant.

Currently, I am in Lima, Peru designing and creating De*Nada's Autumn and Winter Collection 2012. I travel down here twice a year and stay roughly a month or so - just enough time to get everything done! It is a lot of work and emotionally draining. To be away from my husband and dogs is painful. However, I do it because I love what I do. When Atticus was born, I decided with my husband that a month away from my son is impossible. He had to come with me and be with his mommy. There was no question about it. I would be an emotional wreck if I had to spend so much time away from him. Luckily, my husband agreed with me.

Though I was content that my son was coming with me to Lima, Peru to keep me company and meet all his relatives, I was extremely nervous about traveling with him on a 7 hour flight by myself. Unforutnately, my husband could not come with us due to his work. If he did, my anxiety would not have been so bad. But prior to my trip, I was a mental mess. I read many blogs onlines that shared tips on what to do when traveling with an infant. Many of them were very useful. And I used many of the tips during my travel, but I also realized a few extras tips that helped too. The 7 hour flight ended up not being so bad .. yes, Atticus had his fussiness here an there. But overall, he was an angel! Even the passengers sitting next to me and behind me remarked that he was an awesome baby - I agree!!

For those of you traveling soon or in the futrue with an infant, I would love to share with you a few tips that definitely helped me on my trip! Let me know if you have any questions! And if you have any tips of your own, please share!

1. Purchase tickets with enough time for layovers so that you can change diapers and breastfeed. Also, if you have to go through customs or security check, enough time in between flights helps!

2. Pack smart! If you are traveling alone, the best recommendation I have to offer is bring as few things as carry-on as possible. If you can, check your bags in. I only had with me as carry-on, his diaper bag. In this case, I brought along a bookbag with me instead of his normal diaper bag. It was easier to carry than a shoulder bag.

3. Bring snacks! With a baby on your lap, it is hard to eat the meal given during a flight. Your baby may be fussy, which won't allow you to eat. Bring snacks and water with you, just in case you are unable to enjoy your meal.

4. Sling! I used a sling versus a Baby Bjorn on the flight. Don't get me wrong - I love my Baby Bjorn! I use it all the time. However on a long flight, Atticus was a lot more comfortable sleeping in a sling than his Baby Bjorn. Plus, I was able to breastfeed him without showing my booby to the entire flight!

5. Breastfeed and change diapers every two hours, even if your baby is asleep. In my case, if I wait to long to feed or change Atticus, he wakes up screaming and crying. To avoid this, I brought him to the bathroom every two hours to change his diaper and feed him. This also gave him and myself a chance to stretch and relax abit.

6.Take your time! There's no need to rush ... let people exit before you so that you can calmly gather your things and your child without feeling rushed.

7. Keep in mind that you are doing your best! If your child is fussy and other passengers give you the angry look, don't let it bother you. Focus on your baby and yourself. They just have to just remember that they were babies once before!!

When I was a kid, all I would listen to were movie soundtracks and musical scores. While my sisters listened to Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and REM, I would listen to tracks from Phantom of the Opera, Avalon, Empire of the Sun, Edward Scissorhands and the list goes on. I love watching movies and plays. And when the soundtrack to them are in my opinion, beautiful, I can't help but want to bring that sound back home with me. At many times, I would even purchase the sheet music so that I could play my favorites on the piano. Yes, I know... kind of dorky. But what can I say - that's the type of music that I loved and still do. Here are a few of my favorite tracks (a little from when I was younger and a little from more recently)!

En Route to Lima, Peru!

Twice a year, I travel to Lima, Peru to design and create my new collections for De*Nada. I work alongside talented and amazing artists to hand make all my designs in Lima. Since both my parents are from Peru and some of my family resides there, it seemed natural as my business grew to have my line produced there. A lot of my inspirations stems from my experiences in Peru ... the art, its culture, the people, and its way of life.

Today, I am en route to Peru. I am especially excited to travel to Lima this time around because today I am traveling with my son, Atticus. He will be meeting his extended family for the first time, and keeping his mommy company as she works hard to create De*Nada's New Collection for autumn & winter 2012.

So stay tuned! We - Atticus and I - will be keeping you all posted with photos & such throughout our lengthy trip!

art of the day: lauren dicioccio

Some of you may or may not know, but I went to school for art. I graduated with a BFA, completing my thesis on fiber arts. As a child, I was always fascinated with the arts, including music. I give credit mostly to my father for the development of this strong interest of mine. He would always bring me and my siblings to art museums during family vacations, out to the theater for a show or recital, etc. And though my career path has led me towards commercial art and business, a lot of my influence still comes from fine art. Whatever I am inspired of at the moment, I try to incorporate into my work - a new collection, look book, and/or product for de*nada.

Recently, I discovered the work of Lauren Dicioccio - http://www.laurendicioccio.com/ - 35mm hand-embroidered slides. Her work is incredibly intricate, and I am intrigued by her interpretation of family slides and use of embroidering.

Lauren Dicioccio's Statement: My work investigates the physical/tangible beauty of commonplace mass-produced media-objects, most recently: the newspaper, magazines, office papers and writing pads, plastic bags, 35 mm slides. These media are becoming obsolete, replaced by the invisible efficiency of various technologies. In some cases, this transition is a good thing- faster transmission and distribution of information, streamlined systems, openness to user input, less waste. But a hole is left behind by the disappearance of these everyday objects. What will happen when we no longer touch information? When newsprint does not rub off onto our fingertips? When we no longer write longhand?

The tedious handiwork and obsessive care I employ to create my work aims to remind the viewer of these simple but intimate pieces of everyday life and to provoke a pang of nostalgia for the familiar physicality of these objects.

introducing, baby atticus!

It's January 2nd, the second day into the New Year. I am looking forward to this year, but I have to be honest. I already miss 2011. 2011 was a wonderful year for my husband and I. Business was great, and in terms of our personal lives, this past year held life-changing moments. On November 15, 2011 at 11:15pm, I gave birth to our baby boy, Atticus. 8 lbs 14 ounces, 21.5 inches long.

For those who didn't read my earlier post back in the fall time, I wrote about how I wanted an all natural labor without anesthesia. I was intrigued by the documentary, The Business of Being Born, and thought to myself what better way to give birth than an all natural birth. Women have been doing this for hundreds of years, and so why couldn't I? It's less risky than a c-section. And I wanted to give my baby a drug-free birth. Friends of mine who had babies the natural way said that it wasn't too painful. I was told by all of them that the labor does hurt but you can get through it. Keep in mind that their labors lasted 7-14 hours at max.

When it came to my turn, let's just say that the cards were dealt poorly. Forty-four hours in total. I lasted twenty-four hours of natural birth at a birth clinic. Followed by twenty hours at a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, my body wasn't cooperating. And though my midwives and later doctors tried everything to progress the labor, it was realized that my baby was stuck. Though I had a ton of fear about c-sections and did everything during my pregnancy to avoid having one, I pushed aside my fears and agreed to have one. It wasn't about me anymore. Though my son's heart rate was normal and calm throughout the entire labor, I was ultimately concerned about his well-being.

At 11:15pm, I heard the first cries of my son. Though exhausted and drugged out from all the anesthesia and pain medications, I cried with such relief and happiness. My son was born! And each time I think of that particular moment, my eyes tear up. It's honestly the best moment in my life thus far.

Despite the long and grueling labor, I am thankful and honored to go through such a traumatic yet rewarding experience. And honestly, I would do it again because the prize at the end is priceless. I have my lovely Atticus, who I cherish with all my heart. Each an everyday my love for him grows exponentially. I can't believe how beautiful he is, and am amazed by him :)

From this experience, I realized many important things - how strong I am and how much I can endure physically and mentally. I also realized that though you try hard to plan out your life, it never turns out exactly the way you want it to be. That's life, and you just have to go with the punches. And lastly, I realize how much of a rock my husband is. To see the person you love go through so much pain and you can't do anything to relieve them of that pain is incredibly hard. I thank him for keeping strong and helping me throughout those long and tough hours.

So I would love to share with all of you a photo of my lovely little Atticus. He's awesome, and I will be sure to share more photos and stories of him in 2012!!

This past year was an incredibly successful and insane year for us! With the launch and expansion of our third autumn & winter collection, our move to our new work/live space, my marriage with my longtime friend and soul mate, and the birth of my baby son, Atticus, I am surprise and shocked by all that we have accomplished this past year! (**whew!!)

As a small business owner, you experience many highs and lows throughout the work week. And to progress, it ultimately takes a lot of sacrifices, discipline and passion to persevere and move towards your dreams. It's a struggle at times. but when you have the love and support from fans such as you guys, that journey becomes so much sweeter! So thank you guys so much!

Hey there!

Continuing with our fashion photographers inspiration, this week focuses on Bill Cunningham. Cunningham is a legendary street fashion photographer and chronicler for The New York Times. The now 82 year-old has been riding his Schwinn bicycle around the streets of New York for decades capturing the eclectic fashions only found in the Big Apple. What we find inspiring about Cunningham is his talent. He has an amazing eye for photography. We also admire his passion. He started photographing street fashions back during WWII and is still doing it today. Above is the trailer for "Bill Cunningham New York", a documentary on one of the most influential fashion photographers in the business. The documentary features interviews with the big names in fashion, like Anna Wintour, discussing the genius that is Bill Cunningham. The documentary is fascinating and definitely worth checking out!

This week's style spotlight is from across the pond in London, England. I love this young woman's way of layering this outfit. She has on a beautiful watercolor skirt with tights underneath and a long navy vest layered over her leather jacket. She accessorizes this look with a navy scarf, black leather bag, aviator sunglasses, and black arm warmers. Her arm warmers remind me of de*nada's Arm Warmers in black. They are a great way to get some extra warmth when outside in the cold winter months. She looks cute and causal and put together with out trying too hard.

Hey there!

As we've mentioned before, here at de*nada we are inspired by a variety of people, places, and things. I've decided to take a break from posting about our never ending celebrity inspirations. And decided to instead share with you all my inspiration with fashion photographers.

Ulyana Sergeenko is a Russian fashion photographer turned designer. She's recently launched her debut collection for Fall/Winter 2011, which was inspired by 1940s and 1950s illustrations from Soviet Vogue. Sergeenko is a young, beautiful woman who has an amazing eye for fashion as seen in her collection above. The 1940s silhouettes and pin-up girl hairstyles exude femininity. She uses textured fabrics and colorful patterns that really make the garments stand out. The wallpapered background is perfectly cohesive with her overall theme.

What I find inspiring about Ulyana Sergeenko is her ability to shift from successful fashion photographer to successful fashion designer. She is very talented and has accomplished so much already in the fashion world. She is building her own fashion brand, which can be a challenging feat in the fashion industry today. Most of all Sergeenko is following her heart and doing what she loves. That is one of de*nada's most important mantras in life: do what you love and love what you do.

Happy Friday everyone!

We are so busy here at de*nada with the orders that keep on flooding in and prepping for events, all while taking care of little baby Atticus.

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, it's definitely time to put the holiday cheer into high gear. All we've been playing in the office is Christmas music so I thought I'd put together a playlist of a handful of my favorites. There are so many good ones it was tough to choose! This week's spotlight is on a 21 year-old named Aki from Tokyo, Japan. She looks so adorable in her chambray shirtdress, belted knit vest, black oxfords with ankle socks, and colorful bag. Tights and de*nada's Beanie Pom Pom could be added to this look for colder weather. I love Aki's soft curls and her bangs, which compliment her face shape perfectly.

Hello everyone!

The film adaptation of Swedish author Steig Larsson's best-selling book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is much anticipated to debut in theaters December 26, 2011.

The movie's costume designer, Trish Summerville, has teamed up with H&M to create a collection based on the novel and movie's main character Lisbeth Salander. Summerville took Salander's basic pieces and amplified them, making them more fashionable for the H&M collection. The collection includes leather boots and jackets, knitted snoods, platform wedges, and lots of black. All things we love here at de*nada! We love the roughed-up and worn, biker with a splash of grunge feel this collection gives off.

Summerville is a very talented costume designer and according to Donald Schneider, H&M creative director, "will be a legend". We admire Summerville for her talent and design aesthetic. She is not afraid to dare to be a little different.

This highly anticipated collection will be available December 14, 2011 in 180 select H&M stores and online. We can't wait to check it out!

TGIF!

If you've been reading de*nada's blog at all, then you know that I am pretty much obsessed with Florence + the Machine. Florence Welch has the most beautiful voice that gives me the chills every time I hear it. I fell in love with the band's debut album, "Lungs". I pre-ordered their sophomore album "Ceremonials" and haven't stopped listening to it since it came out on October 31st. I listen to the album all the time, whether I'm studying in the library or driving to work in the car. Florence's angelic voice always soothes me and puts me in a better mood. So, here are a handful of my favorite songs (I love them all!) from "Ceremonials". I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

The Braided Roped consists of super soft, multi-twisted strands of yarn attached to a crocheted loop. It comes in 5 wonderful colors: beige, burgundy, black, grey, and olive. Posted above is a short how-to video on wearing the Braided Roped. First, drape the scarf around your neck, leaving the side of the crocheted loop at chest level. Then, loop the strands all together round your neck. Lastly, pull the strands through the loop. Now, you're ready to go! This style is great because it can be worn simply with a long-sleeved tee or bundled up with your favorite winter coat.

The must have color this fall is yellow. Normally, one might think of yellow as a bright summery color, but for this fall it is more muted. Knits in lovely shades of yellow have walked down the Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear runways of designers like Karen Walker and Halston.

Hey all!

This week's product highlight is on the Hooded Scarf Fringe. This style comes in our five lovely autumn/winter colors: black, beige, burgundy, olive, and grey.

The Hooded Scarf Fringe is a long, soft knit with an attached hood and fringe at the ends. Fringe is a popular trend this fall and winter appearing on all sorts of accessories from boots to handbags. Fringe can be seen especially in knitwear accessories. This scarf can be worn with the hood up or down. Keeping your head covered is key in staying warm this winter. Hey everyone!

As I'm writing this blog, Florence Welch's angelic voice is serenading me, singing "Dog Days are Over" and "You Got the Love" in the de*nada office. Florence & the Machine came onto the music scene in a big way with their debut album "Lungs", which instantly soared to the top of the charts. Their sophomore album "Ceremonials" just came out on Tuesday and is already generating positive buzz.

This fiery read-headed UK native not only has a beautiful voice, she also has a great quirky sense of style. For the most part, Florence takes looks straight off the runway and puts her own twist on them when she's on stage or on the red carpet. The fair skinned songstress knows what she likes and what she looks good in. Being tall and slender, Florence has legs for days and does an awesome job of flaunting them in a black leather mini pictured above. She shows a softer, more sophisticated side in bottom picture while attending Paris Fashion Week, donning a nude, possibly a light blush, shift dress and cropped jacket with burgundy pumps. Her gorgeous voice perfectly matches her stunning style.

Everyone here at de*nada is becoming increasingly busy, especially as the holiday season starts to creep up on us. Along with accomplishing the necessary day-to-day logistics, major preparation has gone on because very soon there will be a new addition to the de*nada team, a little (yet to be named) baby boy! Everyone can't wait to meet the little guy!

This playlist is from Foster the People, a new alternative band quickly on the rise in the music scene. I personally love their whole debut album, "Torches" and have featured a couple of their songs on previous playlists. I've been listening to the album in my car every day to and from de*nada. Hey there!

So this week's product highlight is the Cowl Medium Duo. This great unisex style comes in four wonderful color combinations: black/white, yellow/black, black/olive, and brown/black. It's like having two scarves in one!

You can wear the cowl simply around your neck (as in the top photo) or wear it loosely around your head (as in the bottom photo). Below the photos there is short little video on how to wear any of our cowls. Any way you wear it, it's going to look good!
